Imam Sadiq Online Seminary offers heartfelt felicitation on the Occasion of the 6th of Dhu al-Hijja , Wedding Anniversary of Imam Ali peace be upon him with Lady Fatima peace be upon her.
An exemplary marriage:
Taking into consideration that Lady Fatima was the only daughter of the H.Prophet (peace be upon him and I.Ali (peace be upon him) was the son of Abi Talib, one would have expected the marriage to be a grand one. However, it wasn’t so.
Many suitors would come and ask the Prophet (peace be upon him) for L.Fatima (peace be upon him) but the prophet would reject them saying that he would wait for Allah's word on the matter. Sometime later, some companions met Imam Ali (peace be upon him) and mentioned his close kinship to the Prophet (peace be upon him), his great jihad for Islam, and his support for Prophet (peace be upon him) in all his battles and situations. They asked him to propose to Fatimah (peace be upon her) and win the honor of the Prophet’s affinity. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) hesitatingly because of shyness. He came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) lowering his sight to the ground. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked him,
‘What do you want, my brother?’
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) was silent for a while out of shyness and then said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I remembered Fatimah.’
The Prophet (peace be upon him) answered smilingly while delight appeared on his face, ‘Welcome! Allah has ordered to marry my daughter to you.’ Imam Ali’s heart was filled with delight for the honor that Allah granted him.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to Imam Ali (peace be upon him), ‘O Ali, do you have something (to pay as dowry)?’
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said, ‘I have a sword, an armor, and a horse.’
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him, ‘As for your horse, you need it, and as for your sword, you cannot do without it, but as for your armor, you can sell it.’
Imam Ali (peace be upon him) went to the market and sold his armor for four hundred and eighty dirhams and came back and put it before the Prophet (peace be upon him). It was a very simple dowry and it was less than what the poor might pay for their wives.
Some of the companions expressed their discontent, but the Prophet (s) replied, "I did not give Ali to Fatima, it was Allah who gave her to Ali."
The marriage contract was recited by the Prophet himself. He went on the minbar and delivered a sermon, and then said, "Allah has ordered me to marry Fatima to Ali, and if Ali consents, I marry Fatima to him with a mahr of four hundred mithqals of silver". And Imam Ali (peace be upon him) expressed his consent.
On the night of the wedding, the Prophet said to Imam Ali (peace be upon them), ‘O Ali, there must be a banquet for the bride'.
After the banquet, the Prophet (peace be upon him) went to his house along with Ali (peace be upon him) and called for Lady Fatima (peace be upon her). Fatima (peace be upon her) saw her husband with the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Come close" and she went. The Prophet (peace be upon him) took Fatima (peace be upon her) and Ali's (peace be upon him) hand and just as he was about to put them together said, "I swear by God that I have not neglected you. I have cherished you and married you to the best person in my progeny. By God, I have married you to the master and leader of the world and the hereafter and he is one of the righteous... go to your home. May Allah bless you in this marriage and arrange your issues for you." Then he (peace be upon him) went to their house and prayed that Allah creates more bonds in their hearts and bless their progeny.
On the next day, the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked the commander of faithful, Imam Ali ibn Abi Taleb (peace be upon him), "How did you find your spouse?" Imam Ali (peace be upon him) spontaneously answers "the best companion and aide in obeying and worshiping Allah."
And this is how we are told to have our marriages, sweet, simple, and without massive expenses in the remembrance of Allah and thanking him for the beautiful blessing of companionship.
We ask Allah to make our marriages Islamic without extravagance so that our youth are not deprived of this wonderful blessing and have offsprings which can be helpful to the Imam of our time.
